Rare Parasitic Worm Cases Spike in Maui, Report

"The investigation is fluid and the cluster of cases, though not all confirmed, are very concerning", said Department of Health spokeswoman Janice Okubo, per CNN.

The disease can also enter your system by way of infected seafood, though that's rare.

Illnesses caused by the parasite include nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, and headaches that are often global and severe, the CDC noted.

A brain-invading parasite infected Eliza Lape and her husband on their impromptu Hawaii honeymoon, but she still calls the trip "two weeks in paradise". The disease is not contagious.

Lape's husband, Ben Manilla, a Peabody Award-winning professor at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, contracted a harsher form of the disease, she said. The infection is carried by rodents and can be transmitted by slugs, snails and other animals found on fresh produce. This can trigger the development of meningitis.

"I've been using that term for a long time, but the Department of Health doesn't see it that way", said Jarvi.

The parasite can fully mature in rats.

Asked what happens if, indeed, Nyanzi is found to be mentally unstable, Nicholas Opio said, court might send her for treatment. Nyanzi is within her constitutional rights and we are for an all-out legal battle with the state to defend her rights".

Two people said they ate some of the salad before discovering the bat, which was sent to the CDC rabies lab for testing. Garden-variety slugs and snails, which eat rat feces, can serve as intermediate hosts, allowing the parasite to grow to a stage where it is capable of causing infection, though never to full adulthood (and so never capable of reproduction).

State epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park said there is an average of about 10 rat lungworm cases each year statewide and that the recent spike is concerning.

She said an MRI shows her brain has pinholes from parasitic worms.

According to a report from ABC News, the rat lungworm is known by the scientific name Angiostrongylus cantonesis, and once people are infected, there is no known treatment. Since then, rat lungworm has been prevalent in parts of Southeast Asia and Western Pacific Islands, including Australia. "Like, why do all of these cases originate on the east side of Hawaii?"

Those with catchment tanks should also "take measures to keep slugs and snails out and filter water appropriately", Lissa Fox Strohecker of the Maui Invasive Species Committee wrote in a March 13, 2016, column for The Maui News.

The health department further recommends that consumers avoid handling snails and slugs with their bare hands and that all snails, prawns, crabs, and frogs be boiled for 3-5 minutes before being eaten. They've been suffering from, a brain-infecting parasite.

While there is no specific treatment for the disease, the State Department of Health notes that the parasites can not age or reproduce in humans and will eventually die over time, resulting in a "self-limiting" infection. Persons with symptoms should consult their health care provider for more information.
