One For Arthur wins Grand National at 14-1

Ridden by Derek Fox, the horse claimed victory at 14-1.

The Lucinda Russell-trained gelding enjoyed a thrilling sprint down the home stretch, having battled with Cause Of Causes over the final few fences.

Cause of Causes, under amateur Jamie Codd, managed to hold off the fast charging Saint Are, runner-up in 2015, whilst the favourite Blaklion was fourth giving the oldest jockey in the race, 41-year-old Noel Fehily, his first finish in the top four in 15 rides.

One For Arthur became just the second Scottish victor of the Grand National after surging clear of the chasing pack at the last jump.

He added: "The racecourses here in Scotland, they are the best administered, the best racecourses I've ever come across".

"Together (Peter and I) we have had good and bad times but the horses are all back in form now".

Trainer Lucinda Russell, from Milnathort, Kinross, whose partner is former champion jockey Peter Scudamore, said of her horse: "He's incredible".

The result was higher than the market consensus of 9.3 trillion won, according to financial data provider FactSet. Its display business is estimated to have contributed 1 trillion won on strong demand for LCD panels in China.

The eight-year-old became the first Scottish-trained victor of the spectacular steeplechase since Rubstic struck gold in 1979 after producing a tremendous display under an ice-cool Derek Fox.

Russell was becoming the fourth woman to train the National victor after Jenny Pitman, Venetia Williams and Sue Smith, and went on: "It means everything". I can't believe it.

"I never thought I would be in their exalted company", she said.

Richard says: "We don't usually have a bet but we heard Arthur was running, so we put a bet on, and today we just wanted to come up and be part of it".

"He's unbelievable. He's improved every time".

The victor is owned by childhood friends Belinda McClung and Deborah Thomson - who chose the name "Two Golf Widows" for their ownership partnership in a dig at their husbands when they teamed up to buy him. I asked the doctor if I'd be able to ride in the National - he smiled at me and said 'well at least it's a race that you're unlikely to fall off in!' It's been an absolutely awesome day. "To win at three Festivals and be second in the Grand National is fantastic and he gave me some spin", said Codd. Arthur just cruised that race, Derek rode so well and I'm just a bit lost for words really. He credited rehabilitation centre Jack Berry House for helping him get back into the saddle so quickly.

"He's given us a fantastic journey".
