Garcia wins 1st major title at the Masters

Sergio Garcia is presented with his green jacket won with victory at the US Masters at Augusta National

"To do it on Seve's 60th birthday and to join him and Olazabal, my two idols in golf my whole life, it's something unbelievable". He would have been ready for the rest home if he'd had to watch his Spanish countryman lurch and spurt to his first major championship.

But Garcia scrambled for a tournament-saving par and then made birdie at 14 and eagle at the par-five 15th after almost holing out from the fairway to set up an epic finish.

Spieth, the 2015 Masters champ, began the day at 4 under, two strokes behind co-leaders Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia and was thrilled about his chances of winning his second Masters.

Ballesteros, who died in 2011, was the first European to win the Masters in 1980 and backed it up in 1983. "But you know, I really feel like this is a tournament that I can still go on to win". When his drive sailed into the bushes at No. 13, forcing him to take a one-shot penalty, who didn't think it was a prelude to a meltdown? I'm happy, but I don't think I've changed. "I'm obviously thrilled what happened, but I'm still the same goofy guy".

Like Ballesteros, the Spaniard Olazábal won two Masters championships, in 1994 and 1999.

He played a bit better on Saturday, but it just didn't come together for him.

Rose was unable to close the door, though, as he made a bogey on the next-to-last hole.

In the end he won it with straight-line, precision golf.

Playing the 18th hole again, Rose got in trouble with an errant tee shot, forcing him to punch out from behind a giant magnolia tree. Garcia drove perfectly and threaded a 9-iron to within 12 feet. Each of them two-time Masters champions, Garcia is quick to mention the other when asked only about one of them. Rose missed his shorter attempt, leaving the margin at two strokes when it very well could've been double that.

Yet, he wobbled entering the back nine while going toe-to-toe with Rose suffering a bogey at the 10th and then again at the 11th.

Davis Cup: US wins doubles to stay alive in quarterfinal
The Australians will play the winners of the tie between Belgium and Italy, which the hosts lead 2-1 in Charleroi. Australia have not won the Davis Cup since they bagged their 28th crown in 2003.

Garcia birdied the 14th to get within one. Rose was just over the back of the green in two, in position to turn a two-shot lead into four.

There was great hope in the beginning after sharing the 54-hole lead with England's Justin Rose, followed by adversity early on the back nine and later heartbreak from a putter that cost him a victory in regulation.

"The positive thing for me is I feel like I have so much room for improvement", he said.

He's been in a good mood for quite some time and rolled down Magnolia Lane into two very good signs.

The two hit classic shots into 18 and then hit forgettable putts. "Of course I could", Rose said. "It's a subtle break". "Believe in yourself", one of them read. I could have hit a better putt on 17, too. "It was a special day".

Rose knows. He won the 2013 U.S. Open, elevating himself to a different level.

Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler, paired in the penultimate group, fell all the way down into a tie for 11th.

"When I missed my putt", Rose said, "I feared for the worst". He tied for fourth with Thomas Pieters, who ran off four birdies on the back nine. Schwartzel, shooting a second consecutive 68, was third.

Garcia, 37, was also praised by the likes of Spain World Cup victor Iker Casillas and Michael Phelps, arguably the greatest Olympian of all-time.
