North Korea calls U.S. strikes on Syria "unforgivable"

The First Daughter said, "We wanted to make you feel at home", before Xi eagerly greeted the young children.

Foreign investment harms the USA economy in three ways: First, the inflow of foreign capital bids up the US dollar, which reduces the competitiveness of USA manufacturing by making imports cheaper and exports more expensive.

This summit was ill-suited to thrashing out problems, as there was little time for preparation. At some point Mr Trump's nationalist supporters may want to see concrete proof of jobs being returned or trade gaps closing.

The summit was was largely overshadowed by Trump's Thursday night order of a missile strike against a Syrian airfield, following a suspected poison gas attack carried out by Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces on Tuesday.

For more than a year, both during the United States presidential election campaign and following his installation in office, Trump has repeatedly denounced China over trade, alleged currency manipulation, failure to rein in North Korea and Beijing's reclamation and construction in the South China Sea.

On Thursday and Friday, Trump hosted his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for talks during which he pressed Pyongyang's key ally to help curb the North's nuclear weapons program.

For China, the meeting was probably a success.

A look at what China, Indonesia, Australia, and other Asian states had to say about the strike. After dinner, Mr. Xi left Mr. Trump's resort for his hotel nearby, and Mr. Trump walked into a secure room at the resort for a classified update on the effect of the Syria strikes from national security officials. They remarked generally about "progress" in their relationship and optimism about the future. He said he believes that the US and China can continue to develop the relationship, noting that it's the historic responsibility of both countries to work toward peace and stability.

President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping wrapped up their first summit by announcing a 100-day plan to improve strained trade ties, the only tangible announcement after their meetings that were overshadowed by the U.S. military strikes in Syria.

Trump said in a brief appearance before reporters Friday that he and Xi made "tremendous progress" in their talks and that he believes "lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away". "Both the atmosphere and the chemistry between the two leaders was positive, all of us are feeling very good about the results of this summit", said Mr. Tillerson.

"We had long and in-depth communication, " Xi said through a translator. Trump does appear to have done what he said he would do, and listened to his generals. Toshiba Corp., Westinghouse's parent company, has sought a buyer for the unit and Trump administration officials are so concerned about Chinese investors obtaining control of it that they have sought an American or allied purchaser.

Trump, Xi meet again - in shadow of missile strikes on Syria
There are "a thousand reasons to make China-U.S. relationship work, no reason to break it", Xi told Trump, the agency reported . Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will also attend the meetings.

The head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, which provides missile detection for the region, said Thursday she was "extremely confident" of United States capability to intercept a potential intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) bound for America from the North.

Asked about whether that is a plausible scenario, Blinken said that although it is "hard to imagine putting meaningful pressure" on North Korea without Beijing, which has significant leverage to exert economic pressure on Pyongyang, there are several unilateral steps available to Trump.

On trade issues, Trump called for China to "level the playing field" for American workers, stressing the need for reciprocal market access.

On Friday, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said China opposed the use of chemical weapons by any party under any circumstances but didn't comment on the US attack.

He warned however, that it is from North Korea that the potential greatest threat to world peace comes.

Xinhua's commentary on the Syria strike also made no reference to North Korea.

U.S. media, at least, was far more interested in the Syria story than the carefully-crafted summit; after brief comments to the press by Trump, reporters could be heard shouting out questions about the missile strikes before Xi was able to speak his piece.

White House officials caution that Trump is not preparing to plunge the US deeper into Syria.

Sitting with Mr. Trump during a major national security incident gave the Chinese leader an "unprecedented" opportunity to view at close range how the USA leader, less than 100 days into his presidency, acts under pressure, John Park, a specialist on Northeast Asia at Harvard Kennedy School, said in a telephone interview. "I think that the Chinese will be expressing some anger privately to the United States".

- Trump stressed the importance of China following global norms in the South and East China seas.
