Davis Cup: US wins doubles to stay alive in quarterfinal

USA captain Jim Courier, right, talks to Jack Sock of the U.S.at the Davis Cup World Group Quarterfinal in Brisbane, Australia, Friday, April 7, 2017.

He landed a sumptuous cross-court forehand on the line to bring up three break points in the fourth game of the final set, but Isner saved them all.

Earlier a much happier Kyrgios sent Australia into the semi-finals when he beat Querrey in the first of the reverse singles in Brisbane yesterday.

"It's a lot of relief we got through, a tough third set out there", said Kyrgios, who won both singles matches this weekend in straight sets against Top 30 opponents.

Australia will head into Saturday's doubles matchup with high hopes that they can take out the quarterfinal series, after being knocked out of the tournament a year ago by the United States.

The Australians will play the winners of the tie between Belgium and Italy, which the hosts lead 2-1 in Charleroi.

The last time the two met was in the final of the Atlanta Open in 2016 where Kyrgios was the 7-6 7-6 victor on that occasion, and this was equally tight.

United States captain Jim Courier says he has maintained for years that instead of Davis Cup being played over four weeks each year it should be held in one location as a two-week event, except in Olympic Games years.

The Australian went down a mini-break with Isner serving at 5-4 in the final tiebreaker, but he connected on two clutch return of serves to give himself a match point and then clinched the victory with his 20th ace.

"I think Thommo [Jordan Thompson] hasn't gotten enough credit".

Kyrgios and Jordan Thompson got the Aussies off to the ideal start on Friday and with the doubles team of Sam Groth and John Peers losing yesterday, those wins became all the more important.

Australia have not won the Davis Cup since they bagged their 28th crown in 2003.

Kyrgios, who has polarised Australian tennis lovers, rode a wave of noisy support from a home crowd who were chanting his surname after pulling off a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-4 win over American substitute Sam Querrey.

"But at the same time, it feels good".

Hewitt added: "I couldn't be prouder of my boys".

"But with Lleyton on the side telling me to compete for every point, and obviously the crowd, it's easy to get up out here".

However, Kyrgios produced another commanding performance and showed more signs of his newfound ability to produce under pressure, breaking Querrey twice, after the American led 4-1, as he attempted a comeback in the third set.
