Congress just ended internet privacy protections, but how will that affect you?

The rules bar internet providers from obstructing or slowing down consumer access to web content and prohibit giving or selling access to speedy internet, essentially a "fast lane" on the web's information superhighway, to certain internet services.

The privacy bill would repeal regulations adopted in October by the Federal Communications Commission under the Obama administration requiring internet service providers to do more to protect customers' privacy than websites like Alphabet Inc's Google or Facebook Inc. Some groups have called on Trump to veto the legislation.

The Trump-appointed chairman of the FCC, Ajit Pai, is a critic of the broadband privacy rules and has said he wants to roll them back. However, the vote was closer this time with 15 Republicans siding with Democrats in the effort to retain the rule.

Neema Singh Guliani, legislative counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union, "worries that personal data could be used for discriminatory advertising practices, like showing ads for high-interest loans only to low-income consumers, or prices for products that vary based on the user's income information". They faulted the rule saying it was unfair and confusing for consumers. Even worse: The method they would use - passing a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to repeal the rules - would ban the FCC from ever writing similar privacy rules.

CNN's Jake Tapper Flings Refugee Contradiction At Ivanka Trump's Pro-Strike Tweet
Syrian Citizen and Twitter user, Obada thanked President Trump after the USA military performed air strikes on Al-Shayrat air base in Syria.

"What America needs is one standard across the internet ecosystem and the Federal Trade Commission is the best place for that standard", said Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore.

Websites such as Google and Facebook have always been tracking and selling our browsing history and habits on the internet. He said the privacy protections were "commonsense measures" that would have ensured internet users continue to have control over their personal information.

The resolution has been passed over to President Trump for approval.

The rule was voted down 215-205 in the Congress, while the Senate had already voted to block it.
