Ryan: 'I Want Us to Become a Unified Majority'

Healthcare

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer says Democrats are willing to work with Republicans on improving the health care system if they agree to stop trying to repeal former President Barack Obama's law.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, said members who were reluctant to support the American Health Care Act last week now "expressed a willingness to work on getting to yes" in Tuesday's meeting, which lasted roughly two hours.

Ryan said Tuesday's closed-door GOP meeting was focused on rebuilding unity among Republicans, a nod to the divisions between the broader conference and the conservative House Freedom Caucus who banded together to sink the leadership package that would have replaced much of the health care law.

But lawmakers in the Freedom Caucus poured cold water on talk of rebellion now.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office after the withdrawal of the bill on Friday, Trump had sought to deflect blame onto the Democrats. He had never tweeted about the group before.

He had some harsh words for the caucus on CNN Monday: "There's some members of the Freedom Caucus - they'd vote 'no" against the Ten Commandments if it came up for a vote. The group counted 36 members in 2015, according to Pew Research Center.

"It's a start in moving us in a different direction to have more input into healthcare", Poe said. The Freedom Caucus will not go along but supporters of those lawmakers are likely more concerned with truly affordable health care than ideology.

Republicans' blame game for their failure to pass a health care bill is in full swing.

The renewed focus on repealing Obamacare came after Ryan chose to withdraw the House GOP's health care bill Friday, a decision made after it became clear there wouldn't be enough votes to pass it. In the report that followed, correspondent Peter Alexander was eager to stir the pot: "More fallout after last week's health care collapse for a president feeling a bit drained by the swamp".

Vice President Mike Pence also took pains to praise Mr. Ryan over the weekend in a speech in West Virginia as the White House circled the wagons. They also should not exacerbate the problems by failing to promote sign-ups for 2018, scaring off insurers and sneaking in changes by repealing regulations - or by amending other bills to sabotage it as Sen. Or else: "I'm gonna come after you", Trump told North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, one of his fiercest foes in the Freedom Caucus opposition.

"If the Democrats - when it explodes, which it will soon - if they got together with us and got a real healthcare bill, I " d be totally open to it, and I think that's going to happen", he said.

"Unite Obamacare repeal with the repeal of Obamcare regulations, and add in the free-market, cost-saving reforms that the president campaigned on, including interstate competition". We need your support to keep our talented reporters, editors and photographers holding government accountable, looking out for the public interest, and separating fact from fiction.

This would have to be an authentic deal, not an ultimatum, in which Democrats traded things Republicans want, such as medical liability reform and some limited regulatory reform, in exchange for things they should want, such as enhanced subsidies for vulnerable people. "Give the House a straight up-or-down vote on THAT measure", said Club for Growth president David McIntosh. "But we couldn't get one Democrat vote, not one". On Saturday, Trump urged Americans in a tweet to watch Judge Jeanine Pirro's program on Fox News that night.
