Russia releases footage of Syrian air base after US strike

Washington gave Russian Federation advance warning of the attack.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe voiced support on Friday for USA military strikes against Syria after it launched deadly chemical weapons on a rebel-held area earlier this week.

Shayrat Airfield in Homs, Syria is seen in this DigitalGlobe satellite image on February 18, 2017 and released by the U.S. Defense Department on April 6, 2017 after announcing U.S. forces conducted a cruise missile strike against the Syrian Air Force airfield.

United States officials informed Russian forces ahead of the strikes - meant to punish the Syrian government for what they say was a chemical weapons attack earlier this week - and avoided hitting Russian personnel.

An unnamed foreign ministry official quoted by Syrian state news agency hinted the footage was fabricated to preempt the strike.

Nevertheless, she was highly critical of the United States' response.

Kalin said: "The destruction of the Sharyat airbase marks an important step to ensure that chemical and conventional attacks against the civilian population do not go unpunished". Syria has denied using chemical weapons, while the United Nations has said it will investigate the bombing as a possible war crime.

Russia's deputy United Nations ambassador, Vladimir Safronkov, strongly criticized what he called the "flagrant violation of global law and an act of aggression" by the US with "consequences for regional and worldwide security [that] could be extremely serious".

Trump was of the opinion that the U.S. should launch a surprise attack against Syria if it had to. "No child of God should ever suffer such horror", he said.

US President Donald Trump ordered a massive military strike on a Syrian air base at 0040GMT (8:40am Friday Singapore time), in retaliation for what he described as a "very barbaric " chemical gas attack on Tuesday that left scores dead in the Syrian province of Idlib. "The use of chemical weapons against innocent people will not be tolerated".

I support the admin's strike on the air base that launched the chemical attack.

Former shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn tweeted: "Let's hope Syria will now think twice before deciding to gas its own people again".

The United Nations Security Council will receive a Friday morning briefing on the USA air strikes against Syria.
