Uber suspends self-driving cars in two US states after crash

Most of the accidents were minor and weren't caused by Waymo's vehicles. A photo of the aftermath showed another auto in the background with dents and smashed windows. Arizona has no rules specific to self-driving cars. The back seat was empty.

Uber has stopped its self-driving vehicle pilot in Arizona while it launches a probe into the crash.

The Uber vehicle was not responsible for the incident and there were no injuries, Tempe police information officer Josie Montenegro told Bloomberg News. The Uber auto was hit when the other vehicle was unable to yield, which caused the SUV to flip over. Police said another vehicle - driven by a flawed human (for we all have flaws, every one of us) - was responsible for the accident. Those services tend to be more popular in urban environments, where autonomous cars will be most useful, and they've already conditioned users to put their safety and trust in the hands of relative strangers.

Uber's self-driving cars have returned to America's roads following a brief stoppage to investigate an accident involving one of its SUVs.

In December of past year, California banned Uber from testing driverless vehicles in the state after the company released its fleet of automated cars onto San Francisco's streets without seeking permission from the city to do so.

Self-driving Uber cars went back to work in San Francisco in the morning there and were to return to streets in Arizona and Pennsylvania later in the day, Uber said an email response to an AFP inquiry. According to Tempe Police, the Uber SUV was heading south on McClintock when a driver made an illegal left turn, crashing into the SUV. The company later expanded its test site to Arizona after its attempt to field self-driving cars in San Francisco was botched by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Consequently, the California DMV revoked the registration of 16 autonomous vehicles from Uber.

'Iron Fist' Review: The Struggle Is Not Real
It's only half-way through the series we find out how he creates his iron fist or understand more of the legend. It's hard to get past one question: What did Danny Rand do to deserve the power of the Iron Fist?

Though the Tempe accident was not caused by the autonomous technology, it remains to be seen if this accident will hinder support for self-driving cars moving forward.

Indications are Uber is far behind rival Waymo in developing driverless cars. During that week one of the cars was caught on video by a surveillance camera, showing the vehicle passing a red light at a busy intersection. In almost all cases, the cars have backup drivers who can take the wheel in an emergency.

There are also reports of internal strife on Uber's self-driving auto team, which has escalated into a "mini civil war", according to the tech-news site Recode.

Uber Technologies has decided it will suspend its trials with self-driving vehicles, after one of its Volvo's crashed in Arizona this weekend, reports Bloomerg.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick.

It also remains unclear to what extent self-driving cars will be regulated by federal and state governments.
