Man says he was sacked after mistakenly being named terror suspect

The detainees are suspected of being active since November 2015 in recruiting other Central Asian immigrants for "terrorist activity", and for ISIS and another banned Islamist movement, Fateh al-Sham, previously known as the Nusra Front.

Russian law-enforcement agents detained six migrant workers from several countries of central Asia on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities in St. Petersburg, the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement on its website.

There was no evidence of their ties with the perpetrator of Monday's subway terror attack that left 14 persons dead, TASS news quoted the Investigative Committee as saying. "They also tried to involve the recruits in other illicit armed groups, including those acting in other states", the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement.

Investigators said that extremist literature had been discovered in a search of the living quarters of the men. Authorities refused to confirm that the couple were Jalilov's parents but the woman, in response to a Russian TV reporter's question, said she did not believe her son was the bomber.

Officials fear that the predominantly Muslim Central Asian states, which once formed part of the Soviet Union, are becoming prime recruiting grounds for terrorist organizations.

Meeting with the heads of security services from a regional alliance that includes most of Russia's Central Asian neighbors, President Vladimir Putin warned that terrorism remained a threat to all in the region. "His name was not among extremists in the intelligence database", the source said.

"We do know that each of our countries, nearly every country, is a potential target of a terrorist attack", he said.

In a statement, the investigators said the detainees had come to Russian Federation to work. "The recent tragic events in St. Petersburg are the best confirmation of this", Putin said.

"Once again, we have to unite ourselves and take tough measures [on combatting terrorism]", he said.
