Bill Gates again world's richest man; Trump slips

Trump-Bill Gates

Microsoft founder Bill Gates leads the list for the fourth year in a row, with a fortune of $86 billion, $11 billion more than last year. Joining Gates in the top three is investor/philanthropist Warren Buffet, with a net worth of $75.6 billion and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, the biggest gainer on the list, with a net worth of $72.8 billion.

In an article published in September 2015, Forbes wrote that no other mogul featured on their annual rich list has been "more fixated with his or her net worth estimate on a year-in, year-out basis than Donald J Trump".

According to the magazine's annual rich list, Gates' fortune rose to $86 billion followed by United States investor Warren Buffett with $75.6 billion.

The Microsoft founder's net worth is $86 billion, up from $75 billion previous year.

How many U.S. billionaires on the list was 565, which Forbes credited since Mr Trump's November 2016 election to the recent stock exchange upsurge.

As the New York's real estate market has slowed, Forbes began downgrading Trump's net value a year ago, saying in October that his net worth was down to $3.7 billion.

"Forty per cent of Donald Trump's fortune is tied up in Trump Tower and eight buildings within one mile of it", the magazine said.

According to its methodology, Forbes bases its billionaires list on a "snapshot of wealth" taken on February 17 by valuing assets using stock prices and global exchange rates.

Thursday's roundup: Fowler shoots 64 for 1-shot lead

Here are the Thais on the Forbes list, by ranking and net worth.

His wealth jumped to $72.8 billion, a gain of $27.6 billion from past year, Forbes said.

China was second with 319 billionaires, and Germany was third with 114.

"Midtown Manhattan real estate is down; therefore, so is Donald Trump's fortune", the business magazine said in a statement.

Forbes pinned his wealth shrinkage on the receding real estate market. "Lately, the neighbourhood has been struggling - relatively speaking".

The US president also would have missed the big stock market rally following his election, "assuming Trump sold off all of his stocks during last year's campaign, as he has claimed", the magazine said.

Among others in the Forbes top 10, Amancio Ortega of Spanish apparel chain Zara was fourth, Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim was sixth, the Koch brothers, Charles and David, were eighth and ninth and former New York City mayor and Bloomberg News founder Michael Bloomberg was 10th. For the 2nd year running France's Liliane Bettencourt, the L'Oreal cosmetic heiress, was the world's most affluent girl using a $39.5bn net worth. But the list also contained 15 new "self-made" women, mostly from Asian countries, including Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao of budget airline VietJet air.
