Trump Moves to Loosen Obama's Fuel Economy Rules

President Trump speaks to governors Feb. 27 at the White House

The EPA had to file its midterm review this year and they rushed it to confirm the standards before Trump took over in January.

"Car companies have lobbied Trump for months to roll back clean auto standards, putting profits ahead of the health of people and planet, and this is the result", Greenpeace USA spokesman Charlie Cray answered Wednesday.

The Trump administration thinks the Obama White House sped up a review and tried to rush the standards into place after the election.

"Filling up their cars and trucks is the energy bill Americans pay most often, but President Trump's roll-back of fuel economy emissions standards means families will end up paying more at the pump", Mr Markey added.

He spoke during a visit to the American Center for Mobility in Ypsilanti, Michigan aimed at reaching out to auto industry workers and management. The Los Angeles Times sees the possibility of a "legal brawl" between the state and the White House over the standards.

Jerry Dias, the president of Unifor, which includes Canadian auto workers, called Trump a "climate change denier" who has no hope of rolling back Obama-era regulations on the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks.

Injury rules Boult out of second Test
The off-spinner's last Test appearance was also against New Zealand in August 2016, after which he was dropped for Keshav Maharaj. Boult picked up a thigh injury in the drawn first Test.

California was involved because it is allowed to set its own standard - for emissions, not mileage, but one is a proxy for the other - under an anti-smog waiver granted by Congress in 1970.

The industry has pushed back against a fleet-wide average of 54.5 miles per gallon (23.2 kilometres per litre) by 2025 specified in a 2012 fuel economy rule adopted by former president Barack Obama's administration. The review will only deal with 2022-2025 rules, the official said. The EPA will then restart a review of the fuel efficiency rules that is expected to be complete in 2018. In January, shortly before Trump took office, Obama's Environmental Protection Agency locked that goal in place in a move that disappointed vehicle manufacturers. "We're going to help the companies and they're gonna help you".

Thirteen other states making up more than 40 percent of the auto market have signed on to California's program.

Speaking about the changes, EPA administrator Scott Pruitt said "These standards are costly for automakers and the American people". "The U.S. just announced the beginning of the process, so we will monitor developments. with a view to doing the right thing for Canadian consumers and producers".

Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, said federal fuel efficiency standards are "one of the biggest things we've ever done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions".

"Let us put American workers, American families and American dreams first once again", he said, hitting familiar campaign themes. The EPA estimates the current standards will cost $875 per vehicle, while a study commissioned by the auto industry estimates it at $1,249 per vehicle by 2025.
