Scottish leader to seek independence vote in 2 years

May accused Sturgeon's Scottish National Party of political "tunnel vision" and called the referendum "deeply regrettable".

With British prime minister Theresa May looking likely to trigger divorce proceedings this week, Sturgeon said she had to act to "make sure that Scotland will have a choice at the end of this process".

"Instead of playing politics with the future of our country the Scottish government should focus on delivering good government and public services to the people of Scotland".

The Scottish First Minister said she would obtain the approval of MSPs at Holyrood next week before requesting a Section 30 order from the Government, which is required for a fresh and legally binding referendum to take place.

In the 2014 independence vote Scotland voted to remain by 55% to 45%.

Scotland voted by 62 per cent to stay in the the European Union while the United Kingdom as a whole voted out. Sturgeon said that any attempt to prevent Scotland from having another vote would be "tantamount to the United Kingdom government, having sunk the ship with the Brexit vote, trying to puncture Scotland's lifeboat as well".

Every local authority area in Scotland voted to stay in the European Union at last June's European Union referendum, but the country still faces the prospect of Brexit. "There's an implicit suggestion in the timing of the referendum demand that somehow by having a referendum and by voting for independence you can stop Scotland leaving the European Union; that's absurd".

Rutte and Wilders clash on EU ahead of Dutch vote
The Netherlands goes to the polls on Wednesday to elect 150 members for the lower house of parliament and a new government. Up to 13 million Dutch people took to the polls today to have their say in the momentous Dutch election 2017.

London's conservative government has expressed reservations, but not officially responded to prior suggestions of a new vote by Sturgeon's pro-independence movement.

While she added "the option of "no change" is no longer available", she insisted Scots could " still decide the nature of change".

There's still an opportunity to take a step back as it hasn't landed well in Scotland.

"Brexit has made change inevitable", Sturgeon said.

Opposition parties have said they are opposed to a second vote, while the Uk Government has said it would be "divisive" and would lead to "huge economic uncertainty".

Sterling rose after Sturgeon said the earliest date for a new Scottish independence referendum was in the autumn of next year.
