Victims Of Marine Naked Picture Scandal Identified, Speak Out

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand wants Senate hearing on Marine Corps nude photo scandal

Calling itself "Marines United", and first breaking wide via the Center for Investigative Reporting's Reveal podcast, the group members sorted the pictures by name, rank, base location, and even included contact information.

The newly formed task force will monitor the progress of the criminal investigation and determine whether the victims received appropriate support, Neller said.

The site was said to be "for men only" and contained threatening and salacious comments often about rape along with the intimate photos of women service members and veterans in various states of undress, according to media reports.

US Defense Minister Jim Mattis denounced the practice as "egregious violations of the fundamental values we uphold at the Defense Department".

Marine Corps Gen Robert Neller said Friday that the Marines United investigation must be done "carefully".

The Facebook group in question is reported to have almost 30,000 followers, mostly active-duty U.S. Marines, Marine Corps veterans and British Royal Marines. A former lance corporal told the Guardian this week that pictures of her in a bikini had been posted on three private Facebook pages similar to Marines United.

Male service members use a message board on anonymous image hosting website Anon-IB to share nude images of their female counterparts.

Multiple People Injured In Axe Attack At Düsseldorf, Germany Train Station
The attack happened around 9 p.m. local time at the main train station in Düsseldorf, according to federal police in Germany. Police in Germany responded to an axe attack that left several people injured in the Dusseldorf train station on Thursday.

The Facebook group was only part of the scandal, a Business Insider report Thursday found. Numerous women were identified by name, rank, or duty station.

Neller implored for more female Marines who may be victims to come forward.

Twitter users reacted to the nude photo scandal. About 30,000 retired and active-duty US Marines are members of the group, which contains misogynistic comments under nude photos of female Marines. I expect every Marine to demonstrate the highest integrity and loyalty to fellow Marines at all times, on duty, off-duty, and online. Former Marine turned journalist James LaPorta told CBS that some involved in Marines United may be looking for other groups with nude photos now that the group has been removed from Facebook.

"It is a call to arms in the wake of recent reports of unprofessional and inappropriate social media behavior by some who have lost sight of that most fundamental goal they themselves are duty-bound to serve", acting secretary of the Navy, Sean Stackley, said.

Capt. Ryan E. Alvis, a spokesman for the Marine Corps, said Thursday: "We are not able to confirm that Marines are participating in the site AnonIB".

"From the marines who have reached out to us since the Marines United story emerged, we believe these problems are pervasive", said Colonel Don Christensen, former chief prosecutor of the USA air force and president of Protect Our Defenders.

Amy Johnson loved the physical challenges and camaraderie of boot camp and had dreamed of spending her whole career in the Marine Corps, serving her country and fighting overseas wherever necessary.
