Americans Are Having Less Sex Than Ever - and Researchers Are Blaming Netflix

According to Twenge, author of the book "Generation Me", a critical factor appears to be birth cohort, with later-born generations having sex less often than those born earlier in the 20th century.

On the whole, Americans had sex about nine fewer times per year in 2010-2014 compared to 1995-1999. Researchers from Florida Atlantic University found that, across the board Americans are having less sex than ever - no matter what their gender, race, region, work status, and education level may be.

The data was collected by the annual General Social Survey, a nationally representative poll of more than 26,000 Americans conducted since 1989. In a 2016 study, Sherman and his co-authors Jean M. Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University, and Brooke Wells at the Center for Human Sexuality Studies at Widener University, found that millennials and the generation after them (Generation Z) had fewer sexual partners than their Generation X predecessors.

The explanation, the study says, is most likely that the Millennial generation - those born in the 1980s - as well as the generation coming after them are less likely to have a steady partner.

People who took the biggest hits in the bedroom since the 1990s were those with a college degree (about 15 fewer times a year), and people living in the South (about 13 fewer times a year). Among the questions asked every year is this one: "About how often did you have sex during the last 12 months?" On average, only 5.7 percent of respondents have refused to answer that question over the decades.

DESPITE their promiscuous reputation Millennials are having less sex than their grandparents did, experts have revealed. Although increased sexual frequency has always been considered an incentive for getting married, the biggest drop in sexual activity was actually among married couples themselves.

"While those in their 20s had sex more than 80 times per year, this declined to about 60 times a year by 45 and 20 times a year by 65", according to the study.

For instance, among those who are married or living with partners, they went from having sex 73 times a year in 1990 to about 55 times in 2014 - which is even below the frequency of sexual activity for never-married people, who have sex an average of 59 times a year.

Adults in the USA are having less sex than we were 25 years ago, according to a new study published Tuesday in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior. "Data from Britain's Natsal studies suggest that this is the case for the vast majority of people, with only a minority reporting that they were dissatisfied with their sex lives".
